With a cultural concert on the opening night and some traditional aborignie celebrations the tournament will get off to a great start. Groups of all ages will be kept entertained with theme nights and theme park days to ensure that your team will enjoy the sporting and the social side of the tournament.

Most teams travel for the week long tournament with a week before in Sydney and we can ensure that your sports tour continues wherever you would like to go. We can arrange friendly fixtures all over Australia against teams of a similar standard to yours.

Why go to a Tournament?
The Southern Skies Tournament, being a multi-sport event, attracts teams from around the world. Across the four sports we generally have teams from between six to eight different countries attending. The mix of diverse cultures is also an experience that cannot be gained from a normal sports tour and the vibrancy, fun and friendship generated in the accommodation venues is something young athletes remember as a highlight of the event. Also, because of their structure, teams of all strengths are able to experience a level of success. You will compete against as many different teams as we can fit into competition draw, keeping in mind governing body rules and regulations and our desire not to exhaust young athletes.

What's the level of competition?
The level of competition varies - we have strong teams and not so strong teams play in the events. Due to the international nature of the event it is not possible to pre-grade any teams. Competitions in each sport are structured so that teams play round robin games in pools and then play semi finals and finals against teams of similar strength in a tiered structured. Each tier have their own trophies to play for.

How many games will we play?
Teams play on the four competition days (Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri . Wed is a rest day). All teams play every day, and there is no knock-out. Below is a typical format . the exact design of the draw will depend on how many teams are competing. We aim to provide teams the opportunity to play against as wide a variety of opposition teams as possible. Games have been shortened to allow for morning and afternoon or multiple games throughout the day.

Netball 3 x 33 min games per day. Played approximately every alternate hour.
Soccer 2 x 50 minute games per day.
Rugby 2 x 45 minute games per day
Depending on the draw the Friday finals may be one longer game.
Hockey 2 x 55 minute games per day.

Where will we stay?
All participants are accommodated either in private school boarding houses or university accommodation colleges. Rooming configurations can vary from single lockable rooms with shared bathroom facilities, single, double or quad cubicles to multi-bed dormitories. We try to ensure that all buildings contain either all males or all females with teachers, coaches and manager rooms in the same vicinity for supervisory purposes. Typically, each venue will have participants from a number of different countries and different sports in residence so as to maximise the social interaction between participants.

The core accommodation package is for six nights (Sunday to Friday night inclusive) but extensions either before or after can be organised for you. Linen ( except for towels at every venue) is provided. If one of your travelling party loses a room key, this fee will have to paid directly to the accommodation venue prior to departure.

Do we have to cater for ourselves?
The following meals are included in the package

Dinner Sunday to Friday inclusive (6 meals)
Breakfast Monday to Saturday inclusive (6 meals)
Lunch Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday (4 meals)

Lunch is catered at your playing venue and is available over a long window so that the meal can fit into all playing schedules. Lunch consists of a bread roll (salad or meat/chicken and salad), muesli bar or similar and bottled water. Fruit will be available at the playing venues for those who want it. Inter meal snacks are the responsibility of individual teams or team members so canteens are open at all playing venues for any other food that may be required. Lunch on the theme park day will need to be purchased by participants individually and is not included in the package.

The food is well selected and caters for young athletes. Halal, vegetarian, gluten free, vegan or other special dietary meals can be catered for as well - but we will need to know about special dietary requirements about a month in advance.

How do we get around?
The Tournament package includes transfers in quality coaches upon arrival and departure to/from Brisbane Airport and your accommodation venue. Daily morning transfers are provided from your accommodation to the playing venue and then return after your final game in the afternoon. Transfers to all the Tournament social events are included. There are a number of free nights however, and transport on these nights is either by using the public transport system (buses, trains or ferries) or maxi taxis at your cost. Maps and timetables will be provided on your arrival.

What social activities are included?
A wide range of social activities are included in the package. A coach/manager briefing and welcome drinks occurs on the Sunday evening. The Tournament features a Cultural Concert (Monday night) for all attendees including supporters, and team members should prepare an item (song, dance, skit, haka, or other musical performance - serious or humorous) for presentation on this night. There is a well supervised Dance Party for athletes and an Official Dinner for coaches/managers/supporters on the Tuesday evening. On the Wednesday there is a full day outing to a major theme park, like Dreamworld, for all attendees. There are a number of free nights in the program to allow teams to visit the City or take part in joint social activities with other teams. You will be provided before your departure with a booklet containing maps and ideas of things to do in Brisbane .

Is there a Code of Conduct and Risk Management Policy?
Yes there is a Code of Conduct and it applies to participants, coaches, managers and spectators. Please be aware that the Tournament is alcohol and smoke free (except for the Coach & Manager's Official Dinner) for legal and other reasons. Breaches of the Code may lead to a request to leave the event if it is felt by the organisers that continued attendance is detrimental to other participants, coaches, managers or spectators. A copy of the Code will be sent as part of the registration pack.

Risk management within Southern Skies Events is a continuous monitoring process. Southern Skies aims to minimise reasonably foreseeable disruption to operations, harm to people and property. As a result, Southern Skies has devised a comprehensive risk management document which encompasses public liability insurance, code of conduct and injury procedures. The management policies are updated to manage identified risks as they are foreseen. Please contact us if you would like to view a copy of our Risk Management Policy.
